Overview
An extinct volcano rising straight out of the Rift Valley floor, Longonot rewards a honest uphill walk with one of Kenya's great views: a perfectly round forested crater, and the valley stretching to the horizon. Zebra, giraffe and buffalo are regular trailside company.
Best time: Year-round; start early to beat the heat. Moderate fitness required.
Itinerary
Early departure from Nairobi into the Rift Valley. Hike the 3.1 km trail to the crater rim (roughly 1–1.5 hours up), take in the views, and — if your legs agree — continue around the full 7.2 km rim loop. Picnic lunch, descent and return to Nairobi by evening.
